Cyanotype, means sun printing with a thrill in the background.

During my experiments with PALAZZO papers, I decided to present to you my first orace in a combined technique using the cyanotype technique. Cyanotype is a photographic technique that uses the photosensitivity of iron salts, characterized by a monochromatic blue image created by Prussian blue. Cyanotype was invented in 1842 by the English astronomer, chemist and physicist Sir John Herschel. Initially, it was used to copy figures and notes, and later became a popular non camera technique. The artist Anna Atkins was the first to use cyanotype to photograph (reflect) sea algae on paper. Interestingly, Atkins also created the world's first book illustrated with photos made in the cyanotype technique. Inspired by the works of Anna Atkins, I decided to create a series of paintings.

Here are the first works in this series: Autumn leaves diptych (PALAZZO paper, Smell of strawberries and PALAZZO Valencia), On a branch (PALAZZO paper, Mountain Railway Pavilion), Golden Autumn, In the dark forest (PALAZZO Silver Light Oranienbaum paper). I believe that PALAZZO papers are perfect for this technique, their structure adds value to the work. The papers are durable, with a good grammage, so we can soak and rinse them for a long time. I am curious what is your opinion on the presented works. I will certainly not stop there, soon, I will expand the forest series and create a flower series using elements of cyanotype, ink and watercolors. I love to experiment, be inspired by nature and use its goods to create art. Nature is the greatest artist, she amazes me every day.

If you do not know what the noble cyanotype technique is and want to start your adventure with it, below is a short description. The cyan printing process involves the use of two chemicals - ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferrocyanide. Using a brush, apply a diluted mixture of reagents in a 1: 1 ratio to a sheet of paper. It is best if it is a paper with a heavier weight, which will allow it to soak longer without the risk of damaging our work. And that's why I recommend the PALAZZO paper. After it is completely dry, we put the negative on the paper (optionally put it in the frame - it is supposed to prevent the paper from moving during exposure) and expose it to sunlight.

If you are not a fan of blues, you can discolor your work and then tone it. Remember that the print we get in the cyanotype is in the cyan range. The easiest method, due to the availability of ingredients, is toning with coffee or tea. It is enough to prepare a strong infusion of black tea or coffee in a vessel where the entire print will fit. The print must be soaked in such a bath for at least 10-15 minutes. After taking it out, we get the picture in sepia and ocher.
